The Bureau of Labor Statistics has manufacturing employment around 12,400,000 but only counts from the production floor out the loading dock door, and although employment is up since the Great Recession, even robust PMI and CMI numbers won’t move employment above 2007 pre-recession levels as more automation and innovation are introduced. What is going strong is productivity, having now exceeded the peak of Q1 2008 – just before the Great Recession drop. This expansion is expected to continue through 2017 and into 2018.
